Balancing Purpose with Practice: Duan’s Governance Journey

With a professional background in law and industrial relations, Duan Thakhoda is no strange to balancing competing priorities. A 2024 Summer ELGP graduate and current Board Member of Astley Care, Duan brings a passion for people and purpose to everything she does. Alongside her board service at Astley Care, she juggles two jobs, sits on two committees, and still finds time to train in Muay Thai a couple of times a week. 

Duan’s story is a strong example of how governance can provide a meaningful avenue to give back to the community while drawing on professional expertise and lived experience. 

Having already served on committees prior to enrolling in the Emerging Leaders in Governance Program (ELGP), Duan saw the program as an opportunity to deepen her understanding of governance and apply her professional expertise in a meaningful way.  

“I identified board service as a way I could use my skills to give back to the community, and the ELGP’s purpose really aligned with my values, particularly the importance of older Australians and the role they play in our communities,” she explains. 

Through the program, she gained not only governance knowledge but also practical lessons about leadership.  

“I learnt not to be afraid of asking a ‘stupid question’, and to always remember what you’re here for. Purpose should guide every decision.” 

Since graduating, Duan has been contributing her legal training and employment relations expertise to the Astley Care board.  

Reflecting on her alumni journey, she says, “I think the program is absolutely fantastic. I want to help increase the pipeline of skilled knowledge into the aged care and community sector. I’ve already recommended it to a number of future leaders!” 

As Duan continues to build her governance experience, her journey highlights the value of backing yourself, staying connected to your purpose, and using your skills to make a meaningful contribution. We look forward to seeing the impact she continues to make through her Board service and leadership in the aged care and community sector.
