Creating a Place Where Life Meets Legacy: Nicola Hodgson’s Inspiring Journey

Few people embody resilience, passion, and purpose like Nicola Hodgson. A clinical nurse and entrepreneur, Nicola has dedicated her life to improving healthcare access and outcomes. But her journey took an unexpected turn when, around five months ago, she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer and given a two-year life expectancy. Instead of retreating, Nicola stepped forward, taking on the role of Vice President at LJM Memorial Hospice—a testament to her unwavering commitment to making a difference.

Nicola said, “I received an email about LJM AGM, and I thought to myself, ‘I’ve been diagnosed with cancer now. It would be nice to have a hospice-like environment in the northern suburbs because the only place is south of the river, and children and family can’t stay over. It’s a very hospital-like setting.’ So, I attended the meeting simply to see how the hospice project had progressed and ended with putting my hand up for vice president. I just thought, ‘I need to be involved in this somehow—either through lived experience or my clinical background.’” Having run her own business and completed board governance training through the Emerging Leaders in Governance Program (ELGP), Nicola felt she could contribute.

Nicola credits the ELGP program for equipping her with the skills and connections to step confidently into a board leadership role. “The ELGP is definitely a great program to join, especially if you’re looking to be on a board. The connections and networks you build through the program’s partners are amazing. It’s not just about learning governance—it’s about forming relationships with like-minded people committed to driving meaningful change and who you may one day serve on a board with.

One of the biggest takeaways is the lasting relationships you build. Many of us from the program are still in touch; some even came to my wedding! It’s inspiring to see where everyone has ended up in board roles across the community sector.

And the best part? It’s an accessible alternative to high-cost board courses. Not everyone has the means to do that. From public speaking to governance fundamentals, it truly prepares you to contribute meaningfully in the not-for-profit space.”

Today, Nicola is leveraging her lived experience and professional expertise to support LJM’s purpose of creating a compassionate, community-driven hospice where life meets legacy.

Kate, LJM CEO says “From the first time I met Nicola, I was struck by the wealth of knowledge she brings—not just from her professional background, but through the connections she’s made and the strategic insights she shares so generously. The networks she’s built through the Emerging Leaders in Governance Program are already proving invaluable to LJM Memorial Hospice.

Beyond that, Nicola’s lived experience adds an emotional depth to our board. She has a way of making us more open, more human, and more attuned to the real needs of the people we serve. Having someone who is facing this journey firsthand gives us a perspective we would never have otherwise—it challenges us to think beyond business decisions and focus on what truly matters in the care we provide.”

Through the ELGP, Nicola developed key skills in board operations, financial oversight, and strategic decision-making, which now guide her work at LJM Memorial Hospice. Her clinical background provides a unique perspective, bridging frontline healthcare experience with high-level governance. And, her entrepreneurial experience plays a key role, having successful launched businesses transforming healthcare delivery, StillMe and Tempo, Nicola understands the importance of agility, resource allocation, and efficient networking—qualities shaping LJM’s growth and sustainability.

Nicola reflects on her own journey navigating the complexities of starting and growing an organisation: “I had no prior knowledge and experience. Every mistake—I have made it. So, if there’s anything that I can offer is a bit of direction having gone through the startup process and share my learnings so the same doesn’t happen to LJM.”

Nicola’s journey is a powerful reminder that leadership isn’t about titles—it’s about taking action, even in the face of adversity. Her story is one of strength, hope, and the belief that we all have the power to leave a meaningful legacy.

Thanks, Nicola, for stepping up to be a change maker. Want to be a change maker too?

A Vision for Better End-of-Life Care

Liam James McLaughlin (LJM) Memorial Hospice was founded by CEO Kate McLaughlin who was inspired by her late husband’s cancer journey. Driven by the belief that end-of-life care should be holistic and family-centered, LJM is working towards establishing a community hospice featuring cottage-style care units and sensory gardens. The goal is to provide a comforting space where individuals can maintain continuity of life while receiving the care and dignity they deserve.

Beyond the hospice itself, LJM is actively fostering community conversations around end-of-life planning. They host Death Cafes and community events to break down stigmas and encourage open discussions about mortality—an essential step in ensuring better support for those facing terminal illness.

LJM are seeking support
