Leading Beyond the Whistle: Tatiana’s Impact in Sport Governance

For Tatiana, sport has always been more than competition – it’s been a powerful platform for connection, confidence and change. Today, that belief is shaping her leadership journey as a Board Member of the Mandurah Volleyball Association and a Member of the Inclusion Sub-Committee at Volleyball WA.

Deeply involved in Sitting Volleyball at both state and national levels, Tatiana has seen firsthand the transformative role sport can play, particularly for people with disability. But she has also witnessed where systems fall short – where access, visibility and opportunity are not always embedded by design.

“It felt like a natural progression,” Tatiana says. “I’ve moved through participation and coaching, and governance was the next step – a way to influence decision-making so inclusion isn’t just talked about, but actively built into how sport operates every day.”

Her work across both Board and Committee roles is driven by a clear purpose: to help create sporting environments where inclusion is fundamental, not option. From grassroots participation to high-performance pathways, Tatiana is passionate about expanding opportunities for people with disability to not only play, but coach, lead and shape the future of the sport. “I want to help shift mindsets,” she explains, “inclusion shouldn’t be an add-on. It’s essential to the growth, strength and integrity of sport. When it’s done well, everyone benefits.”

That drive for systemic change is what led Tatiana to join the Emerging Leaders in Governance Program (ELGP). Seeking to strengthen her leadership capability and better understand how change happens at a governance level, she says the program provided clarity, confidence and connection at a pivotal time in her journey.

“One of my biggest learnings has been strategic thinking – understanding how decisions ripple across organisations,” she reflects. “But also finding confidence in my leadership voice and recognising that influence comes not just from a title, but from relationships and collaboration.”

Through ELGP, Tatiana says she’s gained the courage to ask better questions, challenge existing systems constructively, and back herself in rooms where decisions matter. It’s advice she now enthusiastically passes on to others considering the program.

“Be open, be curious, and be willing to step outside your comfort zone,” Tatiana says. “The more you engage – building connections, applying what you learn – the more powerful the experience becomes, not just for you, but for the communities you’re looking to serve.”

As Tatiana continues to carve out her governance pathway, her story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when lived experience, purpose-driven leadership and the right support come together. By stepping into governance, Tatiana is proving that true impact in sport doesn’t stop at the sideline – it starts at the decision-making table.
