The 2026 ELGP Journey: Building Confident, Future-Focused Governance Leaders

The 2026 Emerging Leaders in Governance Program (ELGP) has officially wrapped for 2026, with a final reflection session bringing together a cohort that has spent the past four months immersed in one of the program’s most impactful journeys to date. 

From the outset, this year’s cohort committed to stepping outside their comfort zones – engaging deeply with complex governance challenges, building strong professional connections, and developing the confidence and capability required to contribute meaningfully at the Board table. 

Throughout the program, participants explored the realities of governance in today’s community and aged care sectors. They strengthened their understanding of Board roles and responsibilities, due diligence and organisational culture, while unpacking the broader environment shaping decision-making – including financial sustainability, regulatory complexity and evolving stakeholder expectations. These insights provided important context for what effective, future-focused governance looks like in practice. 

A key strength of ELGP continues to be its focus on bridging theory with real-world experience. Through expert-led workshops, panel discussions and practical exercises, participants developed critical skills in areas such as financial literacy, risk navigation and strategic thinking. They learned how to interpret financial information, identify emerging risks and contribute confidently to high-level discussions – all essential skills for Board readiness. 

One of the most powerful aspects of the program was the opportunity to step directly into the sector. Through the Site Visits Day, participants engaged with leading community organisations including SwanCare, Ruah Community Services, Good Sammy, the Y WA Vocational School, Sexual Health Quarters and Brightwater – gaining firsthand insight into the scale, complexity and impact of services delivered across the community. This experience reinforced the importance of governance that is informed, connected and grounded in the realities of operations. 

Equally impactful were the moments of reflection woven throughout the program. From the Leadership Retreat to the final workshop session, participants were encouraged to explore their personal leadership style, values and motivations. These experiences created space for honest conversations, strengthened peer connections, and helped shape a clear sense of purpose as each participant considers their governance pathway ahead. 

The program concluded with the Graduation Night, where the cohort came together with alumni, Community Partners, family and friends to celebrate their journey. Through shared reflections, participants spoke to the defining moments of their experience – from building confidence and clarity, to finding their voice in the Boardroom and contributing with intention. 

It was clear that this cohort leaves ELGP with more than knowledge – they leave with a strengthened sense of leadership, meaningful connections, and the confidence to step into governance roles with purpose. 

We are incredibly proud of the 2026 ELGP cohort. Their curiosity, commitment and willingness to grow has been inspiring, and we look forward to seeing the impact they will make as they step into Board and Committee roles across the sector.
