Why joining a Board could be the best career move you make

Are you looking to grow your career, build new skills, and expand your network, but not quite sure where to start?
If you’re a professional with a drive to lead and give back, joining a Board could be one of the most transformative steps in your personal and professional journey. Board membership may sound like something reserved for senior executives or seasoned professionals, but times are changing. More than ever, not-for-profit Boards are actively seeking young, passionate voices to bring fresh perspectives to the table.
So what’s in it for you? In this blog post, we are breaking down why joining a Board is one of the smartest moves you can make early in your career, and how the Emerging Leaders in Governance Program (ELGP) can help you get there.
Build a powerful professional network
One of the most valuable outcomes of Board membership is access to a high-level network. Serving on a Board connects you with other passionate leaders across trades and industries, people you may never meet in your day job. These are people who have led organisations and built impactful initiatives. These connections can lead to career opportunities, mentoring relationships, partnerships and long-lasting professional friendships.
Being in the room where strategic decisions are made puts you on the radar of people who are shaping your industry and community. Whether you’re interested in growing your impact or being noticed for future roles, visibility matters, and a Board position can put your name on the map.
Accelerate your skill development
Board roles fast-track your learning. You will gain practical experience in governance, strategy, risk management and leadership, all highly sought-after skills in today’s workforce. You will learn to contribute to strategic planning and decision-making, understand financial and risk management responsibilities, balance diverse viewpoints and lead with consensus, and see how an organisation functions from the top-down.
Boards often include professionals from different sectors and walks of life, which helps broaden your thinking and expose you to new trades. This cross-sector learning is invaluable in developing a holistic understanding of leadership. Plus, you will build your leadership confidence. Speaking up in a Boardroom, navigating complex challenges, and contributing to outcomes strengthens your voice and your ability to influence positive change.
Gain a unique perspective
Most of us work within organisations, but few get to see how they are governed. Joining a Board gives you a front-row seat to how high-level decisions are made, and how strategy is shaped and executed. You will step into a non-executive perspective, where your role is to ask the right questions, think long-term, and consider the broader community and stakeholders involved.
This kind of systems-thinking is essential for future leaders and incredibly useful even if you remain in an operational role. It deepens your understanding of what makes organisations tick, and how your work fits into the bigger picture.
Boost your credibility and employability
Getting ahead in your career isn’t just about ticking boxes on a resume. Board experience helps you stand out. It shows initiative, leadership, and an ability to contribute at a strategic level, all things employers value, particularly for management or advisory roles.
Whether the role is voluntary or paid, it sends a strong message that you are willing to invest in your development, give back to the community, and go beyond your job description. It also demonstrates time management, communication skills, and commitment, traits that are hard to prove in an interview but shine bright when you’ve taken on a Board role. For early-career professionals, a Board position can be the game-changer that sets you a part from others in your field.
Make an impact that matters
Beyond career benefits, Board roles are deeply rewarding on a personal level. You get to contribute to causes you care about, help shape the direction of organisations doing important work, and create real change in your community. Joining a Board gives you the chance to make a difference far beyond your day job, and the ripple effect of your leadership could impact lives for years to come.
